How to write an about us page: 3 tips for creators

Oct 23, 2021

Dear reader,

Earlier this year I finished a tiny and beginner level digital marketing series comprising of 22 blog posts in total, specifically targetted for artists and creators to help them navigate the online world where they need to do it all - from setting up one's account, to social media marketing and what not.

I do not expect you to read all 22, but if you get time, do read this: https://blog.sangitaekka.com/digital-marketing-for-artists-digital-marketing-series-part-1/

In the same blog post I ask you to sell yourself, subtly, by giving out some perky information about you. In this post I break down what those "perky" information could be, and how to use them to make your "About Us" pages or sections bring out your personality.

#1 Crisp 1-minute sales pitch for social media bio

If you look into social media accounts, most of them have a tiny space to introduce yourself. This is an amazing opportunity to formulate a crisp introduction about yourself.

Corporates use the 1-minute sales pitch to keep the listener's attention. These 1-minute sales pitches are often in the format of who they are and what they do.

As a creator, think through on what really motivates you in forming your identity as a creator and use that to make an intro. Here are a few pointers:

  • The artform or medium which inspires you.

  • Community based identity - LGBTQIA+, country, regional identities and so on.

  • Your goals. Vulnerability and truth are the ultimate sales pitch.

#2 Tell your story around your 1-minute sales pitch

While the "About Us" section on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Medium wants a crisp pitch, platforms like YouTube or your own blog page would accomodate more.

While it may not be easy for everyone to write things down, having a 1-minute pitch helps you to further build your story.

Here are a few pointers on how to build on your 1-minute sales pitch:

  • Talk about your inspiration. Share a personal story, your learnings, or how you want to contribute to the community you identify with.

  • Talk about people who inspired you to do the work that you do.

  • Give out an invitation to collaborate if you enjoy working with other people.

#3 Find the balance with word length

At the end of the day, it's all about balancing how much you want to say and how much you don't. Ensure that what you put out there serves your intent and aligns with your goals.

Too little information and people won't find you interesting enough. Too much and you will bore people out.

While you are limited with words for 1-minute sales pitch, try keeping the longer introductions to somewhere between 300-500 words. You may add other links to your social media pages or product links as additionals.

I hope that was helpful, and I wish the points help you to better introduce yourself, your craft, and help you gain commissions or sell your products.

On that note, I am expanding my newsletter space to more creators. Feel free to check these products:
