PhonePe Crosses 11 Billion Monthly UPI Transactions in August, Google Pay Nears 8 Billion

PhonePe has crossed the 11 billion monthly transaction mark on UPI for the first time, recording 11.19 billion transactions in August, up from 10.86 billion in July, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India.

Here's how dominant PhonePe's position really is. The Walmart-backed platform accounted for 45.64% of total UPI transaction volume in August, and in value terms, it processed payments worth Rs 14.26 lakh crore, giving it a 47.82% share of the overall UPI transaction value, meaning nearly half of every rupee moved through UPI passed through PhonePe.

Google Pay held firmly onto second place, recording 7.91 billion transactions in August compared to 7.65 billion in July, a 32.26% share of volume and a 33.78% share by value, with its transaction value standing at Rs 10.07 lakh crore for the month. Paytm remained the third-largest player at 1.97 billion transactions, up slightly from 1.90 billion in July.

Put together, PhonePe and Google Pay alone accounted for 77.90% of total UPI transaction volume and 81.60% of transaction value in August, while the top three players combined, PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm, controlled 85.93% of volume and 88.47% of value, underlining just how concentrated India's UPI ecosystem has become among a handful of large players.

The overall numbers tell their own growth story. UPI recorded 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore in August, up from 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore in July, showing transaction volume climbing even as total value stayed roughly flat.

There's a regulatory shift on the horizon too. A new MDR framework could open a fresh revenue stream for UPI apps, from October 15, select person-to-merchant transactions above Rs 2,000 will attract a 0.4% merchant discount rate, capped at Rs 300 for transactions of Rs 75,000 and above, with the fee shared across the UPI ecosystem, including banks, payment service providers and payment apps.

From free-to-use utility to a genuine revenue opportunity, UPI's next chapter could finally start paying for itself.
