One Toshiba Announcement Just Erased Billions in Storage-Stock Value — And Not Evenly

A single capacity announcement from Toshiba sent two of this year's hottest storage stocks into freefall this week — while leaving the rest of the memory sector almost untouched. That split tells a more interesting story than the headline number.

imageHere's what actually happened:

→ Toshiba announced plans to roughly double its hard-disk-drive (HDD) production capacity by fiscal 2027, backed by a $380M investment to expand its Philippine plant — its first major HDD investment in about five years
→ Toshiba's medium-term goal: grow its market share of HDD capacity from just over 10% to 30%, directly challenging Western Digital (48%) and Seagate (42%), who together dominate the space
→ The new drives will also pack up to 40% more storage capacity per unit, with 28TB samples already planned for Q3 2026
→ Western Digital fell as much as 13% in the days following the news; Seagate dropped around 9-10% on October 6 alone, closing at $805.63
→ Here's the split that matters: the Roundhill Memory ETF fell just 0.3% and the Nasdaq-100 actually rose 0.6% the same day — meaning the fear is isolated specifically to hard-disk drives, not the broader memory or AI-chip trade
→ Analysts are divided. Goldman Sachs warned of real mid-term pricing pressure; Morgan Stanley, Bernstein, Citi, and Evercore argue Toshiba's expansion is too small to meaningfully loosen the still-tight nearline HDD supply that AI data centers depend on
→ Adding a twist: Seagate and Toshiba are now also competing against each other to acquire TDK's magnetic-heads business — rivals on one front, bidders on another

Here's what stands out to me: this wasn't "AI storage demand is weakening" — AI data centers are still hungry for every terabyte they can get. This was "a new competitor just said it wants a much bigger slice of a market that's currently making its incumbents very rich." The selloff is about future pricing power, not falling demand. Storage stocks have had an extraordinary run in 2026 on the back of AI infrastructure buildouts — this is the market's first real test of whether that pricing power holds once a third major player decides to fight for share.

Worth watching whether this stays an HDD-only story, or whether it starts bleeding into the wider memory and AI-infrastructure trade.
