Meta Just Launched 100+ Versions of the Same Bet: Glasses Are the Next Computer

At Meta Connect this week, the company didn't just launch new hardware — it laid out its full thesis on where AI wearables are headed, and it's betting big.

Here's what shipped:

→ Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 ($449) — longer battery life, an extra microphone, programmable controls, and new frame styles
→ Ray-Ban Meta Audio — Meta's first Ray-Ban glasses with no camera at all, just navigation, audio, and AI features for people who want the assistant without the privacy baggage
→ Meta says it plans 100+ glasses configurations across Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Meta-branded lines by year-end

The more interesting move is on privacy, not hardware. Meta is letting users opt out of having their glasses' visual interactions used for AI training or reviewed by overseas contractors. It's also bringing "Private Processing" to glasses — some cloud AI requests now run inside confidential computing environments that Meta says even it can't see into.

Here's why that matters: smart glasses have a trust problem regular phones never had. A phone camera pointed at you is obvious. A camera built into someone's glasses isn't — which is exactly why cities and even courts have started fielding complaints about people being secretly filmed in public. By shipping a camera-free option and building in visible privacy controls at the same event, Meta is trying to answer that concern before it becomes the reason this entire product category stalls out.

The bigger bet underneath all of this: Meta thinks the smartphone eventually fades into the background, and glasses become the primary way people talk to AI throughout their day. A hundred configurations isn't really about fashion choice — it's about removing every excuse not to wear one.

Battery life and AI smarts will get the demos and the headlines. Whether people actually feel comfortable wearing a camera on their face in public is the quieter question that will decide if this category goes mainstream — or stays a niche accessory.

Would you wear AI glasses everyday — or does the idea of an always-on camera on someone's face still feel like a line you're not ready to cross?
