Google Brings Back a 2018 Promise — And This Time, It's Actually Talking to Your Mom

Eight years after Google Duplex first wowed (and unsettled) a developer keynote crowd with an AI calling a hair salon, Google just shipped the real version — and it's about to get more personal than "booking a table."

imageCall for Me launched on Pixel 11 phones in late September, and the details reveal a company that's learned from Duplex's original backlash:

→ Gemini places the call using your own phone number, introduces itself as an AI assistant at the start of the call, states it's recording, and gives the business your name — full disclosure, not a hidden bot
→ It can navigate automated phone menus, sit on hold, and handle the actual conversation — book appointments, reschedule reservations, place items on hold
→ You see a live transcript the whole time and can take over mid-call whenever you want
→ Hard limits are built in: no 911 or emergency calls, no financial transactions, no sharing of sensitive personal or health information, no telemarketing
→ It's currently a narrow early preview — Pixel 11 series only, US-based paid Gemini subscribers, and you need the Phone by Google beta app installed

But the more interesting signal is what's buried in the app's code, not what's officially launched. Android Authority found references suggesting Google is testing an expansion beyond businesses entirely — toward calling actual people in your contacts, like telling "Mom" you're running late when you're driving or too busy to pick up.

That's a meaningfully different product than "AI skips hold music for you." Calling a business on your behalf is automating an annoyance. Calling your mom on your behalf is automating a relationship touchpoint — even a small one. Google seems aware of the tension: the current version leans toward short, one-way updates rather than full conversations, which suggests even Google isn't fully comfortable yet with AI standing in for you in a personal call.

There's also a competitive subplot here. The same week this expanded, reports surfaced that Meta's own calling-AI, Muse, was quietly using human contractors behind some calls during testing — without disclosing that to the person on the other end. Google's approach, full disclosure every time, is as much a trust bet as a product decision.

Would you let an AI call your mom on your behalf — even just for a quick "running late" update?
