Growing Up Culty— No Beards, Yoga Pants or Short Skirts

Your Wardrobe Is Your Key to Salvation and Life After Armageddon

Growing up in the cult of Jehovah’s’ Witnesses — there were a lot of DON’TS. My entire childhood was one big NO.

What’s the big deal? Why do I whine about this? Because the type of control I’m talking about is not normal.

Two, I want the world to see the level of control in this cult, and to understand that the Jehovah’s Witnesses are harmful mentally, emotionally and physically to children, women, and families.

They are a doomsday cult, counting the days until the world ends, and they roam on what they call paradise earth.

Does it matter what Jehovah’s Witnesses teach their believers about men having beards and women dressing modestly?

Big deal you say. Perhaps you went to Catholic school and wore a uniform, or maybe you were a Southern Baptist and you were required to wear a dress to church on Sunday. These are more traditional rules, that have been handed down from generation to generation. They are not a reflection of your faith, or lack of. Wearing pants to church, while you may get an eye roll or two, you will not be ostracized by the community. Both rules are rigid, and man-made. Cults take it to a whole new level.

Here are some of the dress and grooming rules of the Jehovah’s Witnesses (also notice how many are geared toward women).

· You should not grow a facial beard. Well-groomed mustaches are permitted.

· You should not wear tight clothing.

· You should not wear revealing clothing.

· Women should not wear yoga pants.

· Skirts or dresses should cover the women’s knees.

· Women should not excessively adorn themselves.

I’m going to break down the reasoning here.

Beards and moustaches: A man having facial hair is viewed by the Jehovah’s Witness community as being dirty. They want an image portrayed to the outside world — of being clean, never mind that Jesus had a beard. A man who has facial hair is considered rebellious.

There is nothing written in the JW literature about having beards or facial hair, but any man in a position of leadership who decides to grow facial hair, will be removed from leadership. There will be remarks and gossiping about him, he will be deemed dirty, and probably have lots of lies spread about him. Moustaches are iffy — but a beard, absolutely not allowed.

Tight clothing, revealing clothing, yoga pants and short skirts: Jehovah’s Witness teach that women who dress in tight clothing, immodest clothing, and excessive clothing, attract unwanted attention from men as well as show weakness in faith. They teach clothing choices which are outside of what the Jehovah’s Witnesses Governing Body (8 old men) have decided is modest — can get a woman raped (yes, they actually teach this).

They teach men that tight pants attract “unwanted homosexual” behavior.

Anyone attending a meeting (church service) or going door to door, must maintain grooming and dress standards — above business casual. Women NEVER wear pants when representing Jehovah. Men wear neckties.

Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that their dressing up shows their respect for Jehovah. While they say it doesn’t matter how a person dresses, you can come as you are — if you wear jeans to a service, no one will go near you. You’ll be a monster.

Women are constantly corrected for her clothing choices and often times the brunt of the congregation gossip. Personally I know of several women, who were corrected for clothing choice, but nothing was done to help them with abusive husbands.

Their literature and sermons teach negative results of wearing what they deem inappropriate attire, and children are told they are disobedient and weak in Jehovah eyes for wanted to break the rules.

This article from a Jehovah’s Witnesses book geared toward youth (that’s what they call ’em) makes me laugh — the leadership tells teens how they are manipulated by fashion trends, while at the same time using manipulation techniques to control the teens into dressing how Jehovah wants them to dress.

However, some become enslaved to style, becoming frustrated if they cannot wear certain styles or brand names. As one young girl lamented: “You see in a store a great pair of pants that everybody else has and you say, ‘Mom, get me those pants,’ and she says, ‘No, I can make them at home.’ I say, ‘But you don’t understand. I want these pants.’”

The recent designer-jean fad illustrates how easily people are manipulated. Jeans suddenly became high fashion.

This picture from JW literature showing life on paradise earth (life after Armageddon when only Jehovah’s followers survive. Notice the clothing, and the women are in the “kitchen”)

Summing it up — Jehovah’s Witness have a strict dress code, because it’s another form of control. It’s another way they stand out and away from the rest of the religions they hate so much.
