The Legacy Keeper

The Legacy Keeper

Jan 10, 2023

I've blogged on several platforms, and recently decided to check out buymeacoffee and they have a blog option! What a great way to connect with you!

Last year I was very fortunate to do a LOT of research and presentations about the history of wartime quilting and knitting. The whole thing stemmed from having worked for four years with Quilts of Valour - Canada Society, and a request to speak at the Celebration Quilt Show in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada. I had become very curious about what happened to the quilts and knitted items that were sent overseas during the world wars, mostly by the Canadian Red Cross but also by people like my grandmother.

There was access to some mind-blowing numbers, a tremendous community spread out in the vast way that Canadians are, coordinating a humungous task. What I love most are the personal stories of the people who did the quilting and knitting...and those are rare. Also rare are the surviving quilts from that time, though there is a collection in Britain waiting for some fundraising and museum space to open up here to return the quilts as part of cultural and handwork crafts study. If you want to know more, reach out and invite me to speak with your group, guild, or club. I'd love to come see you, or connect online.

In partial response to this work, I have written a journal that's called The Legacy Keeper. It's an entire system for people who want to record the stories of the things they make, and has lots of feature pages for quilting and knitting projects. You can just print the pages you need on nice paper, and then place them into a binder for others to enjoy, even after the items you have made are being enjoyed and thoroughly used up.

Do you keep track of the things you make? Where do you have those pictures and files stored? Will other people know how to access them in the future?

To stay in touch, I hope you'll join me here! You can purchase coffee, and you can also join as a member with a monthly contribution that will help me continue to write, research, share, and create (there are 3 levels set up for you - choose the one that suits you best). If you join as a member, there will be special items here just for you, some at a members only discount and some free.

Thank you for your support. For those of you who have bought me a coffee already, thank you SO much! You are helping to keep the wheels turning here! I hope to see you around!
