An exciting new firmware release for the T-Deck is now here in the Shop/Extras section, dubbed the Ripple 'Ultra' version.
The big new feature is Maps! A tile-based map renderer is now included, and can use either Google's old raster tile set, or ones from OpenStreetMap. There are instructions in the ReadMe on how to download tiles yourself. These just need to be saved to the 'tiles' directory of an SD card.
The other big feature included is the 'Post Office' support. For this you need to also have a dedicated Ripple repeater in your mesh with the post office features enabled. This enabled message store-and-forward (messages queued while you are offline or out of reach), group chats, and shared calendars.
The new firmware now also makes use of the T-Deck's touch screen! So, you can now navigate the UI either with the 4-quadrant taps (back, select, up and down), or using the trackball.
Moving Maps
Simply tap on the 'O' on-screen button to toggle GPS tracking on/off. With the tracking on, the map will automatically move as you do. The blue dot shows your live position, and other Ripple user's locations will be rendered as orange dots. (also, moving live!)
Freemium Model
I've switched to the 'freemium' model now. This is much simpler, rather than having multiple firmware versions for download, and you get to use the vast majority of the features for free. The 'ultra' firmware now requires an Unlock Code to view more detailed zoom levels in the map, and to access the Post Office feature.
You simply come to this site, and purchase the "Ripple 'Ultra' Unlock Code" in the Extras/Shop section, and quote your Serial Number (displayed on the device).
Conclusion
A similar release has also been released for the T-Display S3, which will replace the Free and 'Pro' downloads.
Am hoping this sparks more life out of the existing T-Deck devices out there!
