LilyGo T5 ePaper Pro

LilyGo T5 ePaper Pro

Dec 01, 2024

Hi all. I thought you might be interested to see the progress with porting the Ripple Ultra V4 firmware to the new LilyGO epaper device.

As you can see, it is going well. It is pretty much complete, with just minor tidy ups to do now. This port really challenged my little custom UI framework, and because the screen refreshes are somewhat slow (and involve 'flashing') I had to introduce a new UI mode, which breaks away from the scrolling/selection paradigm. This new mode is more like conventional UI's and you just tap on a menu item, rather than scrolling to it. You can still scroll various screens up/down, but are a page at a time.

The new ePaper display driver I wrote also had to contend with detecting how to do just partial screen updates, rather than just blitting full frames on every render. This worked almost on the first try, which surprised me.

Here is the on-screen keyboard: (nothing fancy :-). )

Also, there is a new 'lock screen'. When you press the button on the side (at the bottom-right) it shows the lock screen and disables the touch screen. It just shows an unread message counter, so you can quickly see if you've missed anything important:

I'm not sure when the T5 goes on sale, or if it's available anywhere yet. LilyGo kindly sent me this one to develop on. Also, I don't have any concrete battery life measurements yet. So far it seems good.

EDIT: Is now available for pre-order, to ship Jan 15: https://lilygo.cc/products/t5-e-paper-s3-pro

Anyway, that's it for now.

regards,

Scott Powell
