Stories from the Sea People

Stories from the Sea People

Jun 25, 2020

In 2010, the RV Heraclitus and Ecotechnics began the Mediterranean Oral History project documenting the living culture and heritage of the peoples of the Mediterranean coast. Since then, oral histories have been captured in Algeria, Corsica, Croatia, France, Israel, Italy, Lebanon Morocco, Spain, and Tunisia with more than 150 interviews.

I joined the effort in 2013 filming oral histories and am now producing short films from this incredible archive of knowledge and culture. Here is the first teaser episode of "The Oral Histories of the Sea People" presenting the overall breadth and beauty of this collection while focusing solely on the fishing aspect. The next film features John Pendray, marine painter, whose knowledge of boats, ships and their histories is encyclopedic but his storytelling style is intimate, like a cherished uncle.
