814 Miles

May 05, 2023

God, it's been so long since I posted something that I'm not sure where to begin. The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur since we were getting ready to move North. We had our last day at Subway, took one last motorcycle ride through the beautiful Chihuahuan Desert, and make some repairs. We did have one final night of beer and friendship with the workamper crew and the campground owners and got to say goodbye to some of the characters from the RV park.

Tuesday morning would see us heading out on the first of several legs of this trip which led us to Bottomless Lakes State Park just outside of Roswell, NM. With stunning views and a great story, this was a great place to settle for the first night of travels and being close to the city, we were able to do some shopping and eat a decent breakfast (not cooked by me) for the first time in months.

image I've been having a recurring check engine light over the last few months and it only happens when I'm towing the RV and I've made several repairs of what could be causing it but still the light persists. Finally Gina says to check the air filter that I know I cleaned before leaving Georgia some months ago. It's only been about 2,000 miles so how dirty could it really be, right? Upon inspection, it looked like a dryer lint trap after 48 loads of towels. Once cleaned and reinstalled the check engine light mysteriously vanished, making me relax just a little bit since towing this monstrous rig is stressful enough by itself and one thing off my mind is welcome.

Night two on the road would lead us to Sugarite Canyon State Park, which was a former coal mining town in the early 20th century and holds quite a rich history. That being said, saying that the RV park was tiny is a bit of an understatement and getting our 36ft rig in was a trick. I went into the park the wrong way, intentionally, which meant the utilities were on the wrong side it still meant an easy escape in the morning which was accomplished after fueling up and dumping the tanks.

Speaking of tanks, you may remember that I put an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed of the truck which holds about 40 extra gallons of diesel. While that means I don't have to make a fuel stop between destinations, it also means no restroom breaks or leg stretches. I'll have to work on that.

After a long day of driving through the mountains, which makes me terribly nervous because of engine heat and brakes, and after suffering through traffic in Colorado's largest cities, we landed in Berthoud, Colorado on a farm looking out at the Rockies. We were staying here for two days but we thought we may as well make it four days and see some sights. That is today's plan and I look forward to seeing more of this. Remember to have a great day!
