About the difference between Crypto Coin & Digital Coin by fundamental

Dec 16, 2024

Fundamentally, the difference between crypto coins and digital coins (or often called Central Bank Digital Currency/CBDC) can be seen from the following aspects:

Issuing Authority:

Crypto Coins: Usually not issued by a central authority such as a central bank or government. Examples include Bitcoin or Ethereum, which are managed by a decentralized network and no central party controls them.

Digital Coins (CBDC): Issued and regulated directly by the central bank or monetary authority of the country. For example, the Digital Rupiah which is being developed by Bank Indonesia.

Purpose and Function:

Crypto Coins: Have various functions ranging from payment instruments, stores of value, to platforms for smart contracts (such as Ethereum). They often function as alternative currencies outside the traditional financial system and are not always recognized as legal tender in many jurisdictions.

Digital Coins (CBDC): Designed to replace or complement physical money, becoming legal tender recognized and regulated by the government. The goal is to increase efficiency, financial inclusion, and monetary control. CBDC can be used for various transactions that are usually carried out with physical or electronic money managed by commercial banks.

Decentralization vs Centralization:

Crypto Coins: Operate on a decentralized blockchain system, where transactions are validated by a network of users (miners or validators) without a third party. This makes them more secure from outside interference but also carries the risk of high volatility and the potential for use in illegal activities due to their anonymity.

Digitalized Coins (CBDC): While they can also use blockchain or similar technologies, they are still controlled by a central authority. This provides more control over monetary policy and transaction security, but also has the potential to reduce user privacy as transactions can be more easily traced by authorities.

Value Stability:

Crypto Coins: Their values are highly volatile, influenced by supply and demand in an unregulated market. This makes them high risk as a store of value or means of payment.

Digitalized Coins (CBDC): Their values tend to be stable because they are held by central bank policy, and are often held at parity with the prevailing physical currency. The goals of CBDCs include maintaining economic and financial stability.

Overall, crypto coins and digital coins differ in terms of managing authority, function, decentralization vs centralization, and value stability. This reflects the fundamental differences in purpose and implementation between these two types of digital assets.
