🎄 Heaven Sings Tonight: The Christmas Song That Waited Four Years

There’s a story behind this Christmas song that I’ve never really shared.

Four years ago, I wrote a Christmas song and shared it in hopes that it would be played during our company’s virtual Christmas party.

They didn’t play it.

The feedback was that it lacked a beat, wasn’t catchy enough, and wasn’t “Christmassy” enough.

As a hopeful songwriter, comments like that tend to stay somewhere in the back of your mind. For a while, I wondered whether they were right.

So I kept the song.

Year after year, Christmas came around, and the song remained quietly tucked away.

But I never completely forgot about it.

This year, I went back to that old song and heard it differently. I could hear the choir I had always wanted. I could hear the harmonies rising on the Alleluias. I could hear the orchestra building underneath it.

And instead of trying to make it fit someone else’s definition of what a Christmas song should sound like, I decided to let it become what I had always imagined it could be.

That song is now Heaven Sings Tonight.

And there’s something very special to me about these words:

“Heaven sings and we reply.”

Four years ago, this song couldn’t find a place at one virtual Christmas party.

This year, I’m finally giving it a place of its own.

For this Christmas season, I hope Heaven Sings Tonight finds a place in your hearts. I hope you sing along with it, share it with someone you love, or perhaps even bring it to your church, school, or choir.

And if someday I hear that a choir somewhere decided to sing the Christmas song that once wasn’t considered “Christmassy enough”…

I think that would be a pretty wonderful ending to this little story. 🎄❤️
