As Livy said, After Latinus made peace with Aeneas, Latins and Trojans had to face a war together. The king of the Rutuli Turnus, to whom Lavinia, the daughter of King Latinus and Queen Amata had been promised in marriage before the arrival of Aeneas, not willingly accepted that the stranger had been preferred to him, and went to war simultaneously with Aeneas and with Latinus. Neither side rejoiced in the outcome of that clash...

The Rutuli were eventually defeated, Aeneas killed Turnus, but Trojans and Aborigines, though winners, lost Latinus, their commander. Then Turnus and the Rutuli, disheartened by the present state of things, resorted to the flourishing resources of the Etruscans and their king Mezentius, lord of the then rich city of Caere. From the beginning he had not enjoyed the foundation of the new city of Lavinium, entitled to Lavinia herself, and at that moment he thought that the growth of Trojan power was an excessive threat to the security of the neighboring peoples, so he not hesitate to ally militarily with the Rutuli. Aeneas, terrified of such a war, to win the favor of the Aborigines and to make sure that all were united not only under the same authority but also under the same name, call Latins both people; thereafter the Aborigines did not proved inferior to the Trojans in devotion and loyalty. And Aeneas, strong of these feelings and of the harmony that more and more was growing between the two peoples over the days, despite the fact that Etruria had such an availability of means to reach with his fame not only the land but also the sea for the whole extension of Italy - from the Alps to the Strait of Sicily, he also brought his troops to the field while being able to repel the attack from the walls. The clash was the second for the Latins...

For Aeneas, the clash represented the ultimate mortal feat. He is buried on the banks of the Numico River and people call him Iovem Indigetes. But the Latin people wins his decisive battle and will never forget all the deceased soldiers and kings Aeneas and Latinus.

Ascanius, the son of Aeneas, was not yet mature to command; however the power remained intact until he had reached puberty. In that interval of time, indeed the Latin state and the kingdom that the boy had inherited from his father and ancestors were preserved under the protection of his mother, such were the attitudes of Lavinia, beautiful, strong and wise in character.
