The One With the Black Cat Who Jumped Out of a Postage Stamp: A poem

Jul 22, 2024

She stood in the doorway

Of her 1973 apartment in Brooklyn.

One hand propped on the blue wood

The other resting on her hip and clutching a rectangular piece of paper.

/

While gazing at the moody orange New York skies

She looked like a superstar of the era passing by.

Hands moved, positions changed

But ambiguous expressions on the face remained.

/

And just when the last beam of light disappeared from her balcony

A black tabby appeared on the bluish-green windowsill.

Her meow brought the woman out of her reverie

And she moved to prepare a bowl of food for the cutest cat she had ever seen.

/

The letter lay on the yellow floor – unopened, forgotten.

Maybe for a little while or maybe destined for the trash pile.

On closer inspection, the postage stamp revealed

An upside down yellow bowl lying on a check-marked table cover with a stain shaped like Denmark.
