The Mango Tree: A Goodbye Poem

The Mango Tree: A Goodbye Poem

Sep 30, 2024

This is poem about saying goodbye to your childhood home. Some goodbyes are easier when they are talked about by referring to an object rather than people.

/

She thought when the time came,

To say goodbye to her childhood home,

She would cry over the people

She was leaving behind.

Strangely she cannot get herself to stop

Crying over the ancient mango tree in her courtyard.

/

The one on which she learned

How to swing from one branch to another.

The one which always hid her in it’s leaves

When the time came to play hide and seek with Priya, Suresh and Mandeep.

The one which became an evergreen backdrop

For all her photos when she was growing up.

/

The one on whose branches her mother sat

Holding the tiny infant in her arms.

The one in front of which she now sits,

Older, wiser with streaks of white in her hair,

As she gazes at her daughter

Leaving her home to get a doctorate like her.

She is going to miss the mango tree

And all the memories that revolve around it the most.
