My husband and I watched a video where a pastor told their member that it looked like she lacked caring, and asked them if they've eaten a full whole chicken before, all by themselves.
Where we're from, having chicken could be a luxury for some families and was only served during festive seasons. easter, christmas, new year, birthdays. And this was a lot.
The idea of having say, a rotisserie chicken, all to yourself was either considered greed or thievery.
Watching this pastor ask one of his members if they have had a full chicken to themselves, even though it was funny, made me realize that some of our problems are simple enough to be solved by things we considered luxury.

Personally, i just recovered from a rather tumultuous hospital stay and started eating solid food about 3 weeks ago. My diet has been restrictive and even though this didn't bother me as much as my sluggish intestines, i couldn't help thinking about my loss of appetite to things i enjoy.
As a snacker, it became obvious that those days are over and i am stuck with an easygoing diet for a while.
And as someone who hates to chew their food, I missed my easy snacks.
And it started feeling like … I lacked caring.
Yesterday, we visited a dermatologist thanks to the scars the hospital stay wrought, and after we finished, we stopped to have coffee somewhere. I'm a visual eater and I like to eat pretty things but I was disappointed when what my eyes ate first didn't go so well with my picky taste buds.
This morning, my husband decided to order iced coffee for me and it came with some type of pastry I've never had.
I took a photo for my pinterest, but as i took the first bite, i yelled "EXACTLY!!!".
it hit all the right buccal nerves, as i took the next bite, my brain sprang to action. i felt dizzy and discombobulated.
for a minute, i traveled to a neighborhood bakery in southern Italy, drank coffee from Ghana, and took a walk to a small, dreamy bookstore.
The flaky layers, the rich fillings, the butter ... OH! THE BUTTER!
And it dawned on me: THIS IS CARING. THIS IS MY FULL CHICKEN MOMENT.
the pastor was right, i did lack caring.
and just like that, this post was birthed.
so, if you're reading and wondering what on god's brown earth this ds is writing about today,
yes, it's about this simple pastry that felt like luxurious fireworks exploding in my mouth, and rewired my brain to accept that caring is eating a full whole chicken, sometimes.
I may not have this moment again, not with another pastry, nor do i wish to, but the pastor was right.
this is caring.
I hope you have your full whole chicken moment.
xo
