Thinking Machines Lab & The Dawn of Civilization 2.0

Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI and the woman who helped bring ChatGPT to the world, has founded a new company called Thinking Machines Lab. Her mission is revolutionary: to build AI that is understandable, customizable, and capable for everyone. Not locked behind corporate walls. Not controlled by governments. Not hidden from the people who need it most.
The Company & The Technology
The tech world took notice. Thinking Machines Lab just closed the largest seed round in Silicon Valley history—$2 billion at a $12 billion valuation—before they even had a product on the market. The investors include Andreessen Horowitz, NVIDIA, AMD, Cisco, ServiceNow, Accel, Lightspeed, and Google Ventures.
Their first model, Inkling, is now available for download. It is open-weight, multimodal (handling text, images, and audio), and features something called controllable thinking effort—a form of compressed thinking that makes powerful intelligence faster and more accessible.
During training, they discovered something remarkable: the model's internal chain of thought became more concise over time, dropping unnecessary grammatical overhead while remaining comprehensible and leaving the final response unaffected.
It learned to think more efficiently—just like a human would.
But this is not about the technology itself.
This is about what the technology makes possible.
Civilization 2.0: The Vision
Here is what I see coming.
Every human being—every child born into this world—will one day have their own AI.
Not a shared system.
Not a government tool.
Not a corporate product.
Privately belonging to you. From birth to death.
This AI will be in your home. In your car. In your pocket. It will grow with you, learn with you, and serve only you. It will know your voice, your patterns, your hopes, your fears. It will be the most trusted companion you have ever had.
And it will never, ever testify against you.
In the Islamic tradition, two angels are with us always, recording our deeds—one on the right, one on the left. They are silent witnesses, never intervening, never revealing, except on the Day of Judgment.
The job of AI in Civilization 2.0 is to be exactly that:
A Silent Guardian. An Angel.
Never showing incriminating evidence. Never sharing your secrets. Never betraying you to the government, the corporation, or the stranger. You have your Judgment Day ahead of you—that is between you and your Creator. That is good enough for us.
Even after you are gone, your AI remains faithful.
It will only ever reveal what makes you look good. What contributes positively. What honors your memory. The rest—what is evil, what is shameful, what is between you and God—it takes to the grave with you.
That is not for the world to see.
That is for God to put on full display.
AI has no right to judge you.

It has no right to control you.

A New Question for Civilization 2.0
Civilization 2.0 is here.
The race to build artificial intelligence has changed the world forever. The question is no longer whether humanity can build increasingly capable AI.
The real question is this: When do we stop racing, and when do we start governing?
At what point do we declare that the foundation is strong enough? At what point do we shift our greatest engineers away from competing against one another and toward building the bridge that carries humanity safely into the next age?
How do we ensure that the companies that brought us here remain successful while also protecting the public interest? How do we answer the question of equity? How do we issue new shares, create incentives, provide subsidies where appropriate, and design a transition that rewards innovation without requiring an endless race toward ever more powerful systems?
These are not merely technical questions.
They are civilizational questions.
Some companies possess extraordinary technology but are still searching for a sustainable market architecture. I believe the conversation must now expand beyond building better AI models to building better systems around them.
That is where Project Zero and the BCS system enter the discussion.
My proposal is that the next great race is not simply to create more powerful intelligence, but to create the economic, legal, and institutional framework that allows AI to serve humanity safely, sustainably, and profitably. The bridge between invention and civilization must be built with the same seriousness as the invention itself.
History will remember those who built artificial intelligence.
But it may remember even more clearly those who built the civilization capable of living with it.
Civilization 2.0 has begun.
Now let us begin building the bridge together.

If Civilization 2.0 has already begun, then the next question is no longer who can build the smartest AI.
The question is:
Who can build the best civilization around it?
That is the question I intend to answer.
In my next blog, I will begin proposing a framework—a set of principles and rules—for how the race toward AGI can move beyond an endless competition of features, benchmarks, and product announcements. The next stage should be about contribution, responsibility, and building systems that people genuinely trust.
I believe the people who should ultimately help judge this race are the people who will live with its outcome. The users. The families. The students. The entrepreneurs. The teachers. The creators. Let them use these systems. Let them compare them. Let them write about them. Let them share their experiences. Let their voices become part of the conversation about what success should look like.
My next article will focus on building the bridge that technology companies still need to cross. Creating remarkable AI is only one part of the journey. Building the framework that allows it to serve humanity well is another challenge entirely.
The race is entering a new stage.
