SURAH AL-BAQARAH — VERSES 1–5
THE OPENING OF THE LAST GOODBYE LETTER
As we embark upon our Ramadan journey, we begin with Surah Al-Baqarah—the longest chapter of the Qur’an and one of the great chapters revealed in Madinah.
I describe it as part of Allah’s final goodbye letter to humanity: the final revelation, containing guidance concerning faith, worship, law, morality, community, and the responsibilities of human existence.
🚪 NO OTHER SURAH OPENS LIKE THIS. NO OTHER SURAH CLOSES LIKE IT.
Within the opening passage—verses 1–20—humanity’s responses to divine guidance are presented through three groups:
✔️ The believers—those who accept and follow guidance.
✔️ The disbelievers—those who reject guidance.
✔️ The hypocrites—those who outwardly claim belief while deceiving themselves and others.
The first five verses introduce the qualities of the believers.
THIS IS WHERE OUR JOURNEY THROUGH THE FINAL REVELATION BEGINS.
📜 THE FIRST FIVE VERSES IN ARABIC AND ENGLISH
الٓمٓ ١
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَۛ فِيهِۛ هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ ٢
ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡ يُنفِقُونَ ٣
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ وَبِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ ٤
أُوْلَٰئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدٗى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُوْلَٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ٥
📖 ENGLISH TRANSLATION
1. Alif, Lām, Mīm.
2. This is the Book about which there is no doubt—a guidance for those who are conscious of Allah.
3. Those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided for them.
4. Those who believe in what has been revealed to you, O Muhammad ﷺ, and what was revealed before you—and who have certainty in the Hereafter.
5. They are upon guidance from their Lord, and it is they who will truly succeed.
🔎 BREAKDOWN OF THE THEMES
1️⃣ THE MYSTERY OF “ALIF, LĀM, MĪM”
الٓمٓ
These letters are among the disjointed letters—Al-Ḥurūf al-Muqaṭṭaʿāt—that appear at the beginning of certain chapters of the Qur’an.
Their complete and ultimate meaning is known to Allah.
They remind humanity that divine knowledge extends beyond the limits of human comprehension.
Some scholars have also understood these letters as part of the Qur’an’s challenge to humanity: the Qur’an is composed of the same Arabic letters people use every day, yet no human being can produce anything equal to it.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”
—Sahih al-Bukhari
2️⃣ THE QUR’AN AS THE ULTIMATE GUIDANCE
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt—a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”
🔹 The Qur’an is the revelation of Allah and contains no falsehood.
🔹 It is guidance for humanity, received most deeply by the muttaqūn—those who possess taqwā and remain conscious of Allah.
🔹 Its guidance transforms those who approach it with humility, sincerity, and a genuine desire for truth.
The Qur’an does not merely ask to be admired. It asks to be believed, understood, followed, and lived.
3️⃣ THE FIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TRUE BELIEVERS
“Those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided for them.”
WHO ARE THE MUTTAQŪN?
1. THEY BELIEVE IN THE UNSEEN
They believe in Allah, His angels, His revelations, His messengers, the Hereafter, Paradise, Hell, and divine decree.
2. THEY ESTABLISH PRAYER
They do not merely perform movements. They establish ṣalāh as a living connection with Allah and a foundation of their daily lives.
3. THEY SPEND FROM WHAT ALLAH HAS PROVIDED
They recognize that their wealth, knowledge, time, and abilities are gifts from Allah. Their generosity demonstrates the sincerity of their faith.
4. THEY BELIEVE IN ALL DIVINE REVELATION
They believe in the Qur’an revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and in the original revelations sent to the prophets before him.
5. THEY POSSESS CERTAINTY IN THE HEREAFTER
They do not live only for this temporary world. Their choices are shaped by certainty that they will return to Allah and answer for how they lived.
4️⃣ TRUE SUCCESS COMES THROUGH DIVINE GUIDANCE
“They are upon guidance from their Lord, and it is they who will be successful.”
🔹 True success is not measured only by wealth, influence, possessions, or social status.
🔹 True success is to receive guidance, remain faithful to Allah, and attain His mercy in the Hereafter.
🔹 A believer may experience hardship in this world while still possessing the greatest success: faith, contentment, righteousness, and closeness to Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Successful is the one who embraces Islam, is provided with what is sufficient, and whom Allah makes content with what He has given.”
—Sahih Muslim
📌 KEY LESSONS FOR RAMADAN AND LIFE
✅ 1. STRENGTHEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE QUR’AN
Do we sincerely believe that this is the Book about which there is no doubt?
Are we merely reciting it—or are we working to understand it, follow it, and live according to its guidance?
✅ 2. STRENGTHEN YOUR FAITH IN THE UNSEEN
Belief in the unseen must influence our visible lives.
Prayer, charity, sincerity, patience, and certainty in the Hereafter must shape our daily conduct.
✅ 3. DEFINE SUCCESS AS ALLAH DEFINES IT
Ramadan is not about worldly achievement or public recognition.
It is about purification, transformation, forgiveness, guidance, and returning to Allah with a sound heart.
MY UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE: WHAT STANDS OUT IN THE FIRST FIVE VERSES
📖 THE REALITY OF THE UNSEEN
ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ
“Those who believe in the unseen…” — Qur’an 2:3
The unseen—al-ghayb—is foundational to faith.
It distinguishes between those who see existence only through the physical senses and those who recognize that reality extends beyond what the human eye can observe.
Faith in the unseen is not irrational or careless belief. It is trust in Allah and in the revelation transmitted through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ was shown realities of the unseen by Allah. The righteous servants of Allah may also be granted spiritual insight, discernment, and certainty through sincerity, purification, discipline, and devotion.
However, absolute knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah alone. Any insight given to a human being exists only by Allah’s permission and never independently of Him.
The unseen cannot be mastered through books, intelligence, or technology alone. Sacred knowledge is learned from revelation and may be deepened through sincere worship, companionship with the righteous, and the heart-to-heart transmission of sound Islamic teaching.
Some hearts remain veiled because of arrogance, heedlessness, or persistent wrongdoing. Yet the unseen remains real whether human beings perceive it or not.
This verse is not concerned only with belief in angels, the Hereafter, and divine decree. It reminds us that guidance must enter the heart and transform how we experience and live our lives.
It has been reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Beware of the spiritual insight of the believer, for he sees with the light of Allah.”
—Reported by al-Tirmidhi
The scholars have differed concerning the strength of this narration, but its meaning has often been discussed in relation to the firāsah—spiritual discernment—of a sincere believer.
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW, SEEK THOSE WHO KNOW.
IF YOU CANNOT SEE, LEARN FROM THOSE WHOSE HEARTS HAVE BEEN ILLUMINATED BY KNOWLEDGE, WORSHIP, AND SINCERITY.
The unseen is not equally perceived by everyone, but the truth of the unseen will remain until the end of time.
📖 MOVING FORWARD: THOSE WHO REJECT THE TRUTH
SURAH AL-BAQARAH — VERSES 6–20
Next, we encounter the other two groups:
⚠️ The disbelievers—those who reject the truth.
⚠️ The hypocrites—those who pretend to believe while deceiving themselves and others.
These verses reveal:
🔹 Why some people continue rejecting guidance despite witnessing its signs.
🔹 How hypocrisy damages the human heart and spreads corruption throughout society.
🔹 The terrible consequences of deceiving oneself while imagining that Allah and the believers can be deceived.
