🚀 Open Letter to Muslim Scholars: The Future of Islamic Education with AI
Subject: A Call to Scholars – AI is Reshaping Islamic Learning, and We Must Lead the Way
To the Esteemed Scholars and Educators of the Muslim Ummah,
The time has come to acknowledge a reality we can no longer ignore—Islamic education is outdated, disengaging, and failing to prepare students for the future. The traditional model of learning—where students passively listen to pre-recorded lessons, receive simplified summaries, and rarely engage with the Qur’an and Hadith directly—is no longer sufficient.
A revolution in learning is happening right now, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at its center. AI is already capable of handling the entire burden of scholarship—from cross-referencing Hadith to structuring legal rulings across madhhabs. If we do not take charge of this technology right now, others will, and we risk the dilution or even distortion of our sacred knowledge.
📌 The Problem: The Current System is Failing
🔹 Islamic courses online are overly simplified, reducing complex knowledge into rote memorization with no engagement.
🔹 Students lose motivation because they don’t hear the Qur’an and Hadith directly, only one teacher’s voice repeating rulings.
🔹 Traditional summaries like Imam Quduri’s Mukhtasar fail modern learners—they were designed for a different time.
🔹 Islamic knowledge is fragmented and scattered across books, making it impossible for an average student to quickly access deep insights.
🔹 There is no structured AI-based curriculum that can provide a dynamic, personalized learning experience while ensuring human oversight.
📌 The Future: AI Will Reshape How Islam is Taught
🔹 Students will no longer need years of memorization—AI will instantly retrieve Hadith, Tafsir, and legal rulings.
🔹 AI will create dynamic, personalized curricula for students, adapting to their level in real time.
🔹 Fiqh will be restructured for the modern world, moving beyond outdated summaries and engaging directly with evidence.
🔹 AI will ensure the speed and accuracy of fatwas, allowing scholars to focus on guidance, not retrieval of rulings.
🔹 Every student will have an AI tutor, guiding them while an offline human mentor ensures balance.
📌 The Experiment: A Student Creates a Curriculum with AI
To prove this, I am conducting an experiment—I will challenge myself to learn fiqh using AI while designing a new model of Islamic education. The goal is to show that AI can create a structured curriculum that is superior to traditional summaries like Mukhtasar al-Quduri.
I studied Imam Quduri’s text through Rayyan at Whitethread.org and found the teaching method uninspiring, disengaging, and inadequate for serious students. The pre-recorded format, lack of direct Qur’an and Hadith references, and rigid structure do not belong in the future of Islamic learning.
This project will demonstrate that a student, with AI’s guidance, can reconstruct Islamic education from scratch, structuring knowledge dynamically in a way that engages, retains, and applies better than the outdated methods we are still using.
