Terrifying, right? That’s the grim conclusion of a study published in Science — a genetic reckoning that suggests our ancestors came terrifyingly close to extinction more than 800,000 years ago. For over a hundred millennia, the entire future of the human lineage balanced on a razor’s edge, sustained by a population smaller than many modern high schools.
A 98.7% Collapse
The research, led by population geneticist Haipeng Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences University, reveals that the pool of early Homo sapiens ancestors in Africa shrank to just 1,280 breeding individuals. That represents a loss of 98.7% of their numbers — a bottleneck so severe that it nearly erased our kind before we had truly begun.
And recovery was agonizingly slow. For 117,000 years, this tiny band clung to existence, their numbers barely growing, their genetic legacy compressed into a fragile thread.
How has he come to this conclusion?
It turns out that for decades, paleoanthropologists were puzzled over a mysterious blank spot in the fossil record — a stretch from roughly 950,000 to 650,000 years ago when bones and tools from Africa and Eurasia grow conspicuously scarce. Li’s team proposed a haunting explanation: there were simply too few people to leave a mark.
The period in question — the Early-Middle Pleistocene transition — was a time of violent climatic upheaval. Glaciers advanced and retreated in long, punishing cycles. Africa, the cradle of our lineage, suffered extended droughts that would have turned forests to savanna and savanna to dust.
It was in this crucible, the authors suggest, that new human species began to emerge — including the last common ancestor we share with the Neanderthals and the mysterious Denisovans. Crisis, it seems, was also a catalyst.
Rebirth and Resilience
Around 813,000 years ago, something shifted. The population began to rebound, though how and why remains one of the study’s most tantalizing mysteries still puzzling researchers. What is clearer is the genetic scar left behind. The bottleneck erased as much as two-thirds of human genetic diversity, a loss that still echoes in our DNA today.
That constriction may have had profound consequences. The authors not note that this bottleneck likely shaped key human traits, including, possibly – but not certainly, the very size of our brains.
Not everyone is convinced the crisis was global. Some peer reviewers point to a relatively large number of archaeological sites outside Africa dating to this exact period, suggesting the near-extinction of the pre-human population may have been a regional tragedy rather than a global one. Perhaps, while one branch of our family tree withered, others fared better elsewhere.
Nick Ashton, an archaeologist at the British Museum, called the population estimate "intriguing" but would not hurry to accept the theory right immediately. For such a small group to endure not just years but millennia, he told the magazine Nature, they would have needed three things: a tightly knit community, fierce social cohesion, and a stable pocket of the landscape rich enough to sustain them through the worst nature could throw at them.
But one thing is certain: if the crisis was regional, it was still the branch that led to us that nearly snapped. And when the climate finally relented, our ancestors found themselves in a world with less competitors but richer in flora and fauna — just primed for an evolutionary boost.
If Professor Li is right, all of humanity that exists today is heavily indebted to 1,280 pre-humans who had survived a near-apocalypse.
