Discovering the Botanical Wonders of Stephward Estate

Jun 26, 2024

As The Nature Company, we recently embarked on an exciting trip to Stephward Estate on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Our goal was to explore the lush shade houses and the extraordinary collection of orchids and exotic plants meticulously curated by Stephen van Belkum Eades and Howard Eades.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Stephen and Howard, whose combined expertise has translated into a unique and thriving plant nursery. Their passion for horticulture is evident in every corner of the estate, where plants are lovingly propagated from seeds, cuttings, and tissue culture.

Wandering through the shade houses was like stepping into a botanical wonderland. We marveled at the diversity of orchids, heliconias, and hoyas, each plant more stunning than the last. The estate's advanced Plant Tissue Culture Lab, operated by Howard, ensures that every plant is healthy and well-adapted to various environments, making it a true paradise for plant lovers.

One of the highlights of our visit was learning about the annual South Coast Orchid and Exotic Plant Fair, held every November. This event brings together rare plant enthusiasts and growers from all over South Africa, offering a unique opportunity to discover and purchase exotic species.

After our tour, we enjoyed a delightful meal at the estate's Tea Garden/Restaurant. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, it was the perfect way to relax and reflect on the day's discoveries.

Stephen and Howard’s dedication to their craft and their welcoming hospitality made our visit truly memorable. For anyone passionate about plants or simply looking for a beautiful day out, Stephward Estate is a must-visit destination.
