What Is Street Photography?

What Is Street Photography?

Jan 20, 2021

Have you heard words 'street photography'? If yes, then what is it? Does matter for those who love photography? Let me try to explain it based on my experience.

To be honest, up until this article is made, there is no clear and exact definition of street photography. Cited from britannica.com, Street Photography, a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. Bases on this definition, we may conclude that this act of photography is to capture moments in public places, mainly in streets. However, personally i define street photography as looking and capturing usual scenes to be become unusual. You may wonder, what does it mean?

I personally think that when you or us taking pictures of some usual scenes (such as a person walking, or people chatting and others), those will be unusual. This will make scenes that we see everyday have sense of art inside. There are emotions in each photos that we have taken. And we all know that emotions last forever. Then, another question appears: does it matter?

It DOES matter. Trust me. History talks. There are hundreds of even thousands of street photographs that has become legends. There are also a lot of renowned photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Joel Meyerowitz. Street photographs proves that we can capture amazing moments of daily lives and make them as a piece of art.

Street photography is one of the most important genres in photography. Without it, we won't be able to see what is 'beauty' of streets. As myself, i really love street photography since the first i start did that couple of years ago. And i highly recommend you to try it and see when the usual things become unusual.
