How Media Titans Shift Career Gears: Hearing it from Hall of Fame Reinventionists

Sep 05, 2025

I've been fortunate to have interviewed several honorees of the Folio: awards being named to the Hall of Fame for publishing excellence in October. Their through line? REINVENTION. Take a look or listen to how

In the first of the series I spoke with Jim McKelvey who went from computer scientist to changing the way we pay for virtually anything on the go. With Jack Dorsey (of "Twitter" invention fame) Jim invented "Square," the mobile payment app. Now learn what he's up to next that could literally change the world. Or at least our level of environmental health, with plastic free diapers. AND how brands can quickly figure out how to change their messaging to align with the right partners and values. But you've got to catch this 25 minute episode. Fascinating.

Then there's Doug Olson, who also went from the tech side to the publishing side when he ran Meredith Magazines (think: "Time," "People," "Better Homes & Gardens"...) And think about alignments with brands like Walmart when you buy that great BHG couch or lamp! Talk about good brand partnerships. But NOW he's on to more bling-meets-social media, as Co-CEO of "Bomb Party," with its tiktok famous jewelry reveals. Bet you didn't see THAT coming.

He's is in the current "twofer" episode with David Adler. I cannot even keep track of all the ways David has reinvented himself: from launching a magazine on DC society back in the 70s, which he sold 10 years later for a handy profit -- and is now turning the archival images into songs and content! I kid you not. But wait, there's more. He helmed big PR shops, but is perhaps best know for founding one of the best magazines on events, called "BizBash." Sold that and recently launched an online events mag, "GatheringPoint.news." Oh, but his dad was a profilic writer, ("like father like son") and now he co heads the trust of that content to help Hollywood turn them into box office gems, like the new "The Roses."

imageI can't even. Luckily, I just interview these guys.

And for the next one? Learn how Meredith (see above) went from Meredith to dotdashMeredith to -- ta daaaaa -- "People, Inc.", as I interview its CEO and fellow Folio Hall of Famer, Neil Vogel. But that's the next episode.
