Marching forward

Marching forward

Mar 01, 2023

I've been using Bullet Journal techniques for several years - they really help me to stay organised with day-to-day tasks, to keep my head clear and to expand on ideas that pop into mind.

Many bullet journals are artistically creative and elaborate documents with stickers, hand-drawn lettering or complex habit trackers etc. Mine's always been at the opposite end of the spectrum: super-functional and somewhat scruffy. It works really well for me though.

At the beginning of each month I SHOULD be taking stock of what I learned last month and migrating unfinished tasks forward for tracking in the coming month (capitalised because it doesn't always happen!). Here's what I've got on my agenda in March 2023. It's not so much a hard-and-fast task list. More of a series of directions, ideas and topics of interest. This helps me to be productive by having a menu of options I can select from when I do finally sit down to write music, make a video, or do some admin work which might help develop my workflow.

For example, I've scribbled a note (signified by a dash) about Zencore synthesizers. This isn't a task, just a memory jogging note. Something to consider or perhaps to develop some content about if it feels relevant. A task is signified by a bullet - like finalising my channel's colour scheme.

I keep a separate daily-log page for my day job and for my music projects, so that's a personalised technique which differs from the 'traditional' bullet journal technique. It's really helpful to try things out, discard the ways that don't work for you and to develop your own techniques.

The Bullet Journal Method developed by Ryder Carroll is summarised here - definitely worth a watch if you've not come across it before :)
