Java 22: Explaining New Features with Examples

Mar 25, 2024

Java 22 is out, and it’s a good time to check out the new stuff. This version comes after Java 21, which was a big release. So, there are lots of new features, especially ones that are still being tested. Java 22 has 12 of these new features, called JDK Enhancement Proposals (JEPs). We’ll go through all of them.

The highlights of Java 22:

✅ The finalization of Unnamed Variables & Patterns

✅ Launch Multi-File Source-Code Programs

✅ Statements before super(…) (Preview)

✅ Write intermediate stream operations with Stream Gatherers (Preview)

✅ Foreign Function & Memory API

Also, the features Structured Concurrency, Scoped Values, and String Templates that were introduced as previews in Java 21 will continue to be available for testing in a second preview round without any changes.

Additionally, “Unnamed Classes and Instance Main Methods” which were introduced in Java 21 as a preview, have been revised once more and are now called Implicitly Declared Classes and Instance Main Methods.

I've explained the new features with code example in my below blog.
