While most of my friends were enjoying Guinness in green-decorated pubs, I was anxiously watching the clock, knowing that 17 March wasn't just St Patrick's Day - it was the day my debut novel came into the world. After almost two years of hard work (researching, writing, editing, editing and more editing), I self-published my first book.
Someone recently asked me what makes my book stand out - what makes it different.
I thought about it for a while.
Yes, I wrote it, and I probably see it differently than readers will, but believe me - it's a book I wanted to read and couldn't find anywhere. Even after reading it countless times, I still find myself drawn in. That, I think, is the mark of a story worth telling.
Few novels intertwine the personal and the political as deeply as this one. While many books explore love, loss and conflict, this story brings together two very different struggles - the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the fall of communism in Poland - through the eyes of those who lived them. Its portrayal of morality in conflict is another aspect that sets it apart. There are no clear heroes or villains - just people making impossible choices in the face of war and oppression. It shows how personal choices are shaped by history, adding emotional complexity.
