How I birthed my business

How I birthed my business

Sep 17, 2022

I recently had the opportunity to share the story of how my business came to be. I never imagined I would be spending my days helping people feed their babies. But before I got here, I had to go through a huge personal transformation.

I went to school to study nutrition and spent 4 years learning all about functional foods and nutraceuticals and another 7 years working in the health and wellness industry. I thought helping people heal their gut, balance their stress and improve their sleep was my calling but I was exhausted and burnt out at the end of my work day. I found myself questioning whether or not I was truly happy.

The reality is, I wasn’t. I felt I had a greater calling but I had no idea what it was or how I would find it. The day I became a mom changed the trajectory of my life.

I wasn’t prepared when it came to what to expect after my baby was born despite all of the prep I thought I did.

Breastfeeding was very challenging for me and I couldn’t figure out why. I thought it was supposed to feel natural and it was anything but that.

When I finally decided that “enough was enough” and that I needed some help, I quickly realized the lactation consultant I went to see wasn’t quite on the same page as me when it came to my goals.

Deep down, I had this knowing, I was meant to breastfeed my son and I was determined to make it happen so I did what any mother would do to help their child and took matters into my own hands. I set out to learn more about breastfeeding on my own.

My years in University and the health and wellness industry enabled me to find and navigate research online (though as a new mom at the time it was confusing) but the more I read about it, the more fascinated I became with human lactation.

I have always been a biology nerd. The human body is incredible and my body grew and birthed a human and was now producing food for that human!

I started to take some online classes around breastfeeding and lactation from Dr. Jack Newman’s International Breastfeeding Centre in Toronto and quickly realized it was something I wanted to do more of.

At 4 months postpartum (in 2020!) I enrolled in school to begin the process of re-training to start a career as a lactation consultant so I could empower new mothers to feel confident in their bodies and their abilities to feed their babies. So new mothers would feel seen, validated and heard when it came to expressing their concerns around feeding their babies.

The process of going back to school and working under mentorship, birthed my business and my next stage of life. I now help transform the lives of new mothers all over the world by not only sharing my story and knowledge, but by teaching them the skills they need to be successful on their own and helping them find their confidence.
