Day 26: Soft prep for the edit, taking my time organizing and reorganizing scenes. I thought I was set on the title but it turns out I’m not. Thinking about it, looking at it, and understanding the tone made me want to go back to the drawing board with it. I’ve got a few ideas I’m workshopping and my goal is to have that set by the time I get the first round of edits done. What I do know, is that this story revolves around a couple of fully rendered characters who are deeply connected to their surroundings and each other- whether they know it or not. It’s a romcom that’s heavy on the comedy but I still didn’t want the characters to be caricatures - it’s more like a fireside story instead of a spectacle. One thing that’s important to me is showing the Black experience through my lens to add to the different layers of our story as a whole. That’s why the characters being who they are is vital. Crafting these characters in their world and allowing them to be, kind of forces me to be more aware in everyday life so that I have as much to pull from as possible.
I’m at a point in the process where I might add a few scenes and I might just cut a couple scenes to get this to where I know it can be. That’s part of what makes the stickies so helpful. This is the home stretch and I’m hype about where the story is. The only way this script could be tighter at this point is if I edited along the way, but that’s cheating. I’m glad it came to life through this challenge and that y’all have been there every step of the way.
Day 27 tomorrow - until then, I’ll catch you at the movies ✌🏾
