The basic Kindle has just become nearly 40 per cent more expensive in the United States, and similar list-price increases are appearing in the UK and parts of Europe.
It has not gained a new screen, more storage or any major new features. Amazon has simply increased the US price of the 16GB basic Kindle from $109.99 to $149.99. The Paperwhite has also risen by $40, from $159.99 to $199.99.
Amazon says rising memory and storage costs are responsible. Those costs, in turn, are being pushed upwards partly by the extraordinary amount of hardware required by the AI industry.
As technology companies spend hundreds of billions of dollars building AI infrastructure, are ordinary customers already picking up part of the bill through higher prices on products such as the Kindle?
What has Amazon done?
The clearest increases are in the US. According to reporting by Fortune, the price changes extend beyond Kindles and across Amazon’s Echo, Fire TV and eero ranges.
The Echo Dot received the largest reported US percentage increase, rising from $49.99 to $79.99, a jump of 60 per cent. Amazon told Fortune that the consumer-technology industry is facing significant increases in memory and storage-component costs. The company says it absorbed those costs for as long as it could before adjusting its prices.
Here in the UK, Amazon is showing a new £134.99 reference price for the basic Kindle with adverts. At the time of writing, it is discounted to its previous price of £94.99. Remove the adverts and the list price rises to £149.99, which is a lot of money for a basic Kindle.
Amazon discounts its devices so frequently that the official list price and the amount people actually pay can be quite different. Even so, a £40 increase in the reference price of Amazon’s most basic e-reader is substantial.
I do not doubt that Amazon is paying more for these components. The more interesting question is why those costs have risen so dramatically.

The AI connection
Modern AI systems require enormous data centres filled with processors, memory and storage. The companies building them are not placing ordinary component orders. They are trying to secure huge quantities of hardware, often through agreements stretching years into the future.
Semiconductor-market researcher TrendForce says memory manufacturers are prioritising limited production capacity for server applications. It expects capital spending by the major cloud providers to rise by 98 per cent in 2026 and by a further 50 per cent in 2027. Earlier this year, it also forecast an extraordinary quarterly rise in conventional DRAM contract prices as AI and data-centre demand worsened the imbalance between supply and demand.
That does not mean an AI server has somehow added precisely $40 to the price of every Kindle. The connection is broader than that.
As data-centre operators consume more memory, manufacturers direct more of their capacity towards higher-margin server products. That contributes to tighter supplies and higher prices for the components used by consumer-hardware companies such as Amazon.
Amazon is not alone. Microsoft says the cost of the memory and storage used in Xbox consoles has risen to more than two and a half times its previous level. It has consequently increased US Xbox prices by between $100 and $150, depending on the model.
Apple has also raised the prices of several Macs and iPads. The company pointed to the memory shortage created by the rapid expansion of AI data centres when explaining those increases.
So this does not appear to be Amazon simply deciding one morning that it would quite like to charge more for a Kindle. It is another visible consequence of the wider AI infrastructure race.
Boom or bubble?
Whether this is an AI boom or an AI bubble remains an open question. The demand for hardware is certainly real, and data centres are being built at a rapid pace.
In fact, very close to where I live, campaigners are opposing Microsoft’s plans for new hyperscale data centres at Skelton Grange in Leeds. The dispute is a local example of a much larger global expansion.
Memory supplies are being snapped up, and the resulting increases in component costs are already feeding through to consumer products. What remains uncertain is whether companies will eventually earn enough from AI products and services to justify what they are spending.
Perhaps they will. AI could become as fundamental to modern technology as the internet or cloud computing. I suspect it probably will.
But that is not the question I am trying to settle here. The important point is that, long before we know whether this enormous investment will pay off, consumers are already experiencing some of its costs.
That does not make these price increases dishonest. It does mean ordinary buyers are being affected by an investment race they did not create.
What does this mean for Kindle?
At these prices, alternatives such as Kobo and PocketBook inevitably become more attractive. At the time of writing, the Kobo Clara BW costs less than an advert-free basic Kindle in the UK while also offering warm lighting and waterproofing.
Switching brands may not provide a permanent escape from higher prices, however. Kobo, PocketBook and BOOX all rely on components affected by the same global supply chain. They may have different contracts or margins, or be willing to absorb the additional cost for longer, but if these pressures continue they may eventually face the same decision.
This is not necessarily an Amazon problem. Amazon may simply be the first e-reader company whose price increases have made a much wider technology problem clearly visible.
For the moment, Kindle’s higher price makes its competitors worth considering. If memory and storage costs continue rising, however, affordable e-readers themselves could gradually become harder to find.
Who pays for the AI race?
The race to build AI infrastructure is increasing demand for memory and storage, contributing to higher component costs across the technology industry. Those costs are now appearing in familiar consumer products.
Before we discover whether the AI boom ultimately delivers everything being promised, ordinary customers may already be helping to pay for it.
