A neighbourhood reclaims its streets
Although it’s been sixteen years since it was first rolled out, I only became acquainted with the “Streets for People Project” recently. It was during one of my random walks through Hackney, east London, specifically, the Cazenove Ward, that I came upon the artwork on the pavement.
“Streets for People” was an ambitious project that sought to engage local residents in a long-term regeneration programme. From rubbish-strewn streets, the neighbourhood was transformed into a hub of social meeting places and child-centred play streets.
Evidence that when a community comes together — it often succeeds.
