Larking about in the mud, London style
We know it as the river in the heart of London. And at some point, it was also one of the largest ports in the world. With so many communities settling near its banks, it should come as no surprise that the Thames is also a place of archaeological importance. This much was evident in a recent exhibition at Waterman’s Hall.
“Mudlarkers” are people whose hobby is to search the riverbed for historical treasures. The water level of the Thames fluctuates between seven and ten metres. Once the water recedes, the bare, muddy surface reveals myriad untouched objects that tell a unique story about London.
Just another cultural layer the city peeled off for me.
