Thanks to Booktasters, I’ve been reading a lot of Self Published and Indie lit lately. Ok, that was promoting, but honestly, I read tons of books. I love reading. Always have. Thus, this opportunity was something “I could not resist.”
Honestly, something that hurt me in the process is seeing how little exposure this good works have. How very little critics. And this means they’re bound to disappear amidst a sea of books with very aggressive marketing techniques available to them.
This is unfair.
Ok. No one ever said that life was fair. But I think we could do something to avoid pretty good stories to go on untold. Those stories deserve to go on. It’s only fair.
I’ve put some ideas together on how you could support your favourite self published author. Obviously, these are just suggestions. I believe everyone should be free to find the way that works for them.
By buying those books, instead of investing in the bigger brands, we give these little people a voice. Sometimes even a way to pay rent or food.
Value the work behind: those authors are spending a lot. A lot of time, of talent, of effort. They not only write, but research and do marketing (not to mention editing, proofreading, design, etc.).
Be nice (unless you can’t). I honestly don’t think any self published author deserves being abashed or told off for their job. Unless they do something against a minority. Like an author who abused ND people, but that’s another story.
Now, please try to see beyond the mistakes, and value the story for itself. Sometimes the editor is an arse and they don’t purge out grammar and/or spelling and/or check for correctness. Believe me: I reviewed a book after the publisher, who was also the editor, checked it. It was horrible. But the story was awesome! Focus on the story. The author isn’t always guilty for mistakes.
Take pictures of yourself with the book. People are curious. Let them know that they are missing a new story!
Quote the book. Everyone likes new catchy phrases or funny lines. You’ll look witty and help someone. Win-win!
And most importantly
Leave reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, etc. Write reviews. Tell people about that book! Don’t just say: “oh, it was good! Thumbs up!” around the street. No. Please let people know that it’s worth spending their time and money there. Here’s the thing: everything these days works with an algorithm. Amazon, Google Books, etc., do too. If a fixed number of people write a review, the book gets better chances of being found. Please: write them!
I’m doing all of these, and except for a couple of stories that I really want to read, I’m done with traditional published books. There’s a bigger reason behind this, so I might write about it later.

Gracias a Booktasters, he estado leyendo últimamente mucha literatura indie y autopublicada. Ok, eso es hacer vil promoción, pero es en serio que he estado leyendo un buen de libros. Me encanta leer y siempre me ha fascinado. Así que esta fue una oportunidad “que no pude rehusar”.
Siendo muy sincera, lo que me ha dolido en el proceso es ver la poca exposición que tienen tan buenos trabajos. Cuán poca crítica. Y esto significa que están condenados a desaparecer en medio de un mar de libros que sí cuentan con técnicas de marketing sumamente agresivas
Esto es verdaderamente injusto.
Ok. Nadie dijo que la vida fuera justa. Pero sí creo que se podría hacer algo para que esas historias tan buenas no se desvanezcan sin ser contadas. Pues esas historias merecen permanecer.
Aquí hay algunas ideas para apoyar a tu autor auto publicado favorito. Obviamente son sólo sugerencias. Creo que cada quien debería ser libre de hallar la estrategia que mejor le funcione.
Comprando estos libros, en vez de invertir en las editoriales más grandes, les damos a estas personas tan pequeñas una voz. Para unos, la venta de un libro puede significar pagar la renta o la próxima comida.
Valora el trabajo que hay detrás: estos autores están gastando muchísimo. Mucho tiempo, talento, esfuerzo… No sólo escriben, hacen investigación y marketing (sin mencionar edición, revisión de texto, diseño gráfico, etc.)
Sé amable (a menos que sea imposible). Creo sinceramente que ningún autor auto publicado merece que se le menosprecie o reclame por su trabajo. A menos que hagan algo en contra de un grupo vulnerable. Como una autora que abusó de los ND, pero esa es otra historia.
Por favor trata de ver más allá de los errores. Valora la historia por sí misma. A veces el editor es un idiota, y no revisa errores ortográficos y/o gramaticales y/o de estilo. Me ha pasado: revisé un libro después de que lo aceptaran (eran los mismos editor y publicista). Horrible. ¡Pero la historia era increíblemente genial! Concéntrate en la historia. No siempre es culpa del autor si hay errores de dedo.
Tómate fotos con tu libro. Las personas son curiosas. ¡Déjales saber que se están perdiendo de una nueva historia!
Cita el libro. A todos les gustan las frases matadoras o las líneas chistosas. Así no sólo compartes conocimiento, también ayudas a alguien más. ¡Es un ganar-ganar!
Y lo más importante…
Deja tu opinión en Amazon, Goodreads, etc. Escribe opiniones. ¡Cuéntale a los demás sobre ese libro! No sólo les digas: “¡oh, es buen libro! ¡Vale la pena!” a los que te topes en la calle. No. Por favor deja que la gente sepa que vale la pena invertir su tiempo y dinero en él. Hay una razón: todo funciona hoy día con algoritmos. Amazon, Google Books,etc., también. Si determinado número de personas escriben una opinión, ese libro tendrá mejores posibilidades de que lo encuentren. Por favor, ¡escríbelas!
Yo hago todo esto y a excepción de algunas historias que realmente quiero leer, no pienso volver a comprar nada de la industria tradicional. Hay razones de peso que influyeron en esta decisión, así que quizá escriba después al respecto.
