When Hombre de Piedra arrived to my hands, I honestly was not expecting it to be like this. It exceeded my expectations in many, many ways.
I found myself jumping from my seat, crying or cursing. I don’t know how the author did it. The book is a biography and yet it has mafia, film stars, a ghost… even a witch doctor! It’s unbelievable what a common man can go through!
The book follows the story of Pedro Padilla, a very common man who all of a sudden gets the chance to play in the movies. Before you go all “whoa! What a lucky fellow!”, know that he was still a very common guy, a nobody. He was but Jorge Negrete’s double stunt.
Negrete was a Mexican film star from around the 1930s until his death in 1953. He was a good looking fellow, but he couldn’t, for his life, ride a horse like a normal countryman would. The only way to save the whole projects was for Padilla to play those parts. And he did.
I’m not going to ruin the read for you, in case you want to actually get it, because I think it’s an amazing story. Without great things and/or events, you find yourself wondering what could possibly happen now to Pedro and his family.
They are quite ordinary people, with ordinary lives, yet the author manages to capture the reader so that they become attached even to those who appear in one or two chapters.
I feel that, even if the language picked by García Padilla could be a barrier between he and his potential readers, it is still very true to the language of that time and place. People used to have such mannerisms. So… maybe give it a try and don’t feel overwhelmed by it? Books are always a chance to learn new things, right?
And please don’t get me started on his people knowledge!! I think it was a delight to see how the author took time to actually show me the difference between a person from the southern countryside and other from the lower ghettos in Mexico City. I could see both cultures perfectly!
The cover is catchy. It’s impressive, but that’s actually Padilla. I know, right? I was fooled at first. But apparently it’s a common mistake.
Now, the only issues I have are as follows (nothing is perfect, right?):
I found the author mentioning a couple of details that add nothing to the story at all. Like skin colour, race... I think it might be excused if we consider that the story takes place in a very racial setting and era. But I honestly don’t like that.
I don’t like abuse, any kind. Sorry. It’s part of this sick society, but… I still loathe it. If it triggers you, be warned. There is a failed sexual abuse, work harassment, child physical abuse, and, at very few occasions, foul language. This book is so true to reality, it might be at times scaring (and, like I said, for some readers even triggering). Some things are right out unthinkable, not to say inhuman.
And the last thing I absolutely didn’t like at all was the lack of editing. I found out the publisher didn’t really review the book but say they did (I got access to the manuscript, and I thank the author for their trust). So uncool, guys 👎🏽! From me you get the proverbial “you had one job!” meme. I would be over lenient with García Padilla and show extra love through reviews, though, for it wasn’t his fault.

Cuando por fin llegó Hombre de Piedra a mis manos, no me esperaba encontrar lo que encontré. Excedió mis expectativas en muchas, muchas formas.
A ratos me reía a carcajadas, otras lloraba, y otras más maldecía. No sé cómo lo consiguió el autor. Este libro es una biografía y, sin embargo, incluye mafiosos, estrellas de cine, un fantasma… ¡hasta un médico brujo! ¡Es increíble todo por lo que puede pasar un hombre común y corriente!
El libro narra la historia de Pedro Padilla, un hombre muy común que de pronto tiene la oportunidad de actuar en películas de cine. Antes de que esto provoque un “¡wow! ¡Mira nomás qué suerte!”, hay que tener en cuenta que seguía siendo un don nadie, un tipo normal. No era sino el doble de Jorge Negrete.
Negrete fue una estrella del cine mexicano alrededor de 1930 hasta su muerte en 1953. Era un hombre muy guapo, pero no podía, ni aunque se le fuera la vida en ello, montar a caballo como si fuera una persona del campo. La única forma de salvar los proyectos de cine fue que Padilla se encargara de esas partes. Y eso hizo.
No voy a echar a perder el libro para aquellos que quieran leerlo, porque de verdad la considero una historia increíble. Sin grandezas ni eventos deslumbrantes, el lector se encuentra preguntándose qué sucederá con Pedro y su familia.
Son personas ordinarias, con vidas corrientes, y aún así, el autor consigue atrapar a la audiencia y hacerles entrar en confianza hasta con aquellos que aparecen por solo uno o dos capítulos.
Siento que, incluso si el lenguaje que García Padilla eligió podría volverse una barrera entre él y sus lectores potenciales, sigue siendo muy fiel a aquel de ese tiempo y lugar. Las personas solían tener esos manierismos. Así que mi sugerencia es darle una oportunidad, sin dejar que agobie. A fin de cuentas, los libros siempre nos dan la oportunidad de aprender cosas nuevas, ¿no?
Y por favor, ¡ni empecemos a hablar de su conocimiento de las personas! Creo que fue una delicia ver cómo este autor se tomó el tiempo para mostrarme las diferencias entre alguien de los campos sureños y otra gente nativa de los barrios bajos de la Ciudad de México. ¡Podía ver las dos culturas perfectamente!
La portada atrae. Aunque sea difícil de creer, se trata de Padilla (no de Negrete). Ya sé. A mí también me confundió. Aparentemente es un error común.
Ahora, los únicos “peros” que tengo son estos (no podía ser perfecto, ¿verdad?):
Vi que el autor añadió un par de detalles que no agregan nada a la historia. Como color de piel, raza… Quizá podría disculparse si se tiene en cuenta que el contexto es una época sumamente racista y estereotipada. Pero honestamente no me agrada.
No soy partidaria de ningún tipo de abuso. Lo siento. Es parte de esta sociedad enferma… mas lo aborrezco incluso con esa excusa. Si es un trigger para ti, sería bueno que estés alerta. Se menciona abuso sexual frustrado, acoso laboral, abuso físico a menores, y, en algún momento, hay lenguaje obsceno. Este libro es tan realista, que a ratos puede dar miedo (y como ya mencioné, puede provocar a algunos lectores / triggers). Algunas situaciones son definitivamente impensables, casi inhumanas.
Y lo último que definitivamente no me gustó para nada fue la falta de edición. Descubrí que la editorial no revisó en realidad el libro, aunque dijo haberlo hecho (tuve acceso al manuscrito y agradezco al autor su confianza). ¡No está padre, chicos👎🏽! De mi parte les dedico el típico meme de “¡tenían sólo un trabajo!”. Por eso yo tendría mucha comprensión extra con García Padilla y le daría extra valoración a su trabajo, porque no fue culpa suya.
