Let's tackle Elementary Task 4 Math!
Summary of Task 4 Math:
This task involves planning, evaluating, and analyzing results of a specific math class. It requires providing context information and an overview of a learning segment of 3-5 consecutive math lessons, identifying a central focus, and developing a formative assessment. A blank copy of the assessment should be submitted, along with evaluation criteria to analyze student learning. The class performance on the assessment should be summarized, and three focus students' work samples should be analyzed to identify a targeted learning objective/goal for a re-engagement lesson. A re-engagement lesson should be written, implemented, and work samples collected and evaluated for effectiveness.
Let's break it apart into steps:
STEP 1: Class Selection and Context
Choose one class to focus on for the assessment. Context for Learning Part A.
Provide relevant background information and a summary of the learning segment.
STEP 2: Describe the Learning Segment
Select 3-5 consecutive mathematics lessons for the learning segment.
Identify a central focus to promote conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mathematical reasoning/problem-solving skills.
Complete the Learning Segment Overview, Part B.
STEP 3: Create a Formative Assessment
Create or modify a formative assessment to be used in the learning segment that measures whole class learning.
The assessment should allow students to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical concepts, computational/procedural fluency, and reasoning/problem-solving skills.
Provide a blank copy of the Chosen Formative Assessment used to evaluate student performance. Chosen Formative Assessment, Part C
Define the evaluation criteria used to analyze student learning. Evaluation Criteria, Part D
STEP 4: Evaluate Class Performance
Summarize and the class performance on the formative assessment by analyzing learning patterns and relating those to conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, or mathematical reasoning/problem solving. Prompt 1 of Mathematics Assessment Commentary, Part G
STEP 5: Analyze Three Work Samples
Identify a common struggle seen in the work samples of three students.
Label those three work samples, Focus Student 1, Focus Student 2, Focus Student 3. Part E: Student Mathematics Work Samples
Analyze the work samples of these three focus students. Prompt 2 of Mathematics Assessment Commentary, Part G
STEP 6: Plan a Re-Engagement Lesson
Identify the targeted learning objective/goal for the re-engagement lesson.
Describe a re-engagement lesson that enhances student understanding of the targeted learning objective/goal. Prompt 3 of Mathematics Assessment Commentary, Part G
Implement the lesson with the three focus students in a small group, individually, or with the entire class.
STEP 7: Evaluate the Effectiveness of your Re-engagement Lesson
Collect and submit work samples from the re-engagement lesson for the three focus students.
Label those three work samples, Focus Student 1, Focus Student 2, Focus Student 3. Part F: Examples of Student Work from Re-engagement Lesson
In the final prompt you will state the effectiveness of the re-engagement lesson and provide evidence from work samples to back up your claim. Prompt 4 of Mathematics Assessment Commentary, Part G
Put a copy/screenshot/image of your Re-engagement Assessment at the end of the Mathematics Assessment Commentary, Part G.
