Courage Before Confidence

Courage Before Confidence

This week reminded me that courage usually does not look big or dramatic. Most of the time it looks ordinary.

This week started with a beautiful band concert on Sunday night. My youngest played trumpet with a broken left arm, and my middle son was completely in his element behind the drums in jazz band. Watching one push through discomfort and the other confidently lead with rhythm reminded me that courage looks different for everyone.

Monday I listened to my youngest son give four presentations for his homeschool co-op before leaving Friday for a trip with his grandparents. The presentations were not perfect, but that was not the part that mattered most to me.

What mattered was that he got up there and did them anyway.

Then my middle son faced a different kind of courage. He spent part of the evening debating whether it was too late to call a girl from homeschool co-op and ask her to high school prom. Instead of impulsively calling, he thoughtfully texted first to ask if she had time for a quick call.

After all the nerves, he made the call.

She said yes.

And honestly, I was proud of him simply for being brave enough to ask.

Our boys have a unique mix of homeschool and public school, and they genuinely enjoy getting to experience both worlds. Watching them step into different environments, friendships, and opportunities with courage and confidence has been really special to witness.

Watching them lately has reminded me of something simple.

Confidence usually comes after courage, not before it.

Walk with Light,

Lucia
