The problem is that they’ve also been hiding their relationship to everyone for the same amount of time. Unlike other queer movies, this time it is not the children who hide their sexual orientation, but the parents who fear their children's reaction. This is not because son and daughter are homophobic—the story never confirms this—but because they condemn the fact that their mother has been cheating on her husband for so long.
It’s complicated. Nina wants them both to go and live in Rome, but Madeleine just wants her son to forgive her. Their relationship is put to the test when Madeleine has a stroke and is left incapacitated, and Nina can’t find a way to prove that she’s been her partner all this time. This is why the fight for same-sex marriage is so necessary. Nina and Madeleine have been together for more than two decades, but legally speaking, their relationship never existed.
To be next to Madeleine, Nina crosses the line several times: she breaks into her apartment, intentionally destroys a car and takes her out of her nursing home without permission. Although she has every right to be with her girlfriend, it’s hard to be on the side of someone who acts so erratically, especially when she goes full psycho on the poor caretaker. But it’s not just Nina who misbehaves as everyone in the film, from the cowardly Madeleine to her unforgiving children, acts out of spite and selfishness.
With a quick pace and characters that break the law at all times, Two of Us feels, occasionally, more like a thriller than an intimate drama. Filippo Meneghetti is very good at creating mood and atmosphere but not that great at writing dialogues as some confrontation scenes take place behind a window or inside a car, so we don't know what they are actually saying.
There aren't as many lesbian films as there should be, let alone movies with women over 60 as the main characters. So it's always great that productions like this one get made in the first place. But it would be even better, just for once—because I'm not asking for much either—to see a story where the old protagonist doesn’t end up dead, with dementia, or with a stroke.
