Luke 3: 1-14
John's ministry appeared to be short, sharp, shocking and very effective.
A strong consistent voice used by God, to prepare the "Way of the Lord". A voice to stir individuals to change their perspective and open their eyes to the things and ways of God. John's words in today's vernacular, lacked political correctness. John's choice of words today, could trigger many Church members to leave the Church in droves. Today's congregants, would take their tithes, offerings and their numbers elsewhere. Where the "word" is more respectful and palatable. But John's voice and words were exactly what was needed by that generation "generation of vipers" he called them. His words resonated with truth because the people responded by even the biggest "sinners" asked him questions on what they needed to do in order to please God. The Publicans "Tax Collectors" who charged people more than they ought to and they pocketed the excess, becoming richer and more reviled by the day. The soldiers who harassed the people and brought false charges, exonerated people for money they too wanted to know what they needed to do. Luke 3:12-14 .
Jesus invited John the Baptist his cousin to baptize Him , in the midst of all the people lining up for baptism. Just imagine how John the Baptist felt about Jesus's request after telling the people that he was not worthy to unbuckle the shoes of the Messiah.
The holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove, as He emerges from the waters of baptism in the River Jordan. There was also the accompanying "VOICE" of God endorsing Jesus saying. "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased". Jesus' ministry was launched following His baptism and John's ministry came to a screeching halt.
"This is my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
