In Full Bloom: Embracing the Joy of Gardening

Dec 10, 2024

During my time in Portugal, I dedicated moments to clear my mind and focus on crafting a life filled with beauty and fulfillment. What does a beautiful and delicious life entail? I explored what it feels like, tastes like, and most importantly, looks like.

Upon my arrival in Portugal, one of my first actions was to surround myself with nature's beauty—I bought flowers and a plant at a local Lidl. This small plant, which traveled with me as I explored the country, became a symbol of my journey and a constant reminder of the serenity plants bring.

As I leaned into my love for plants and flowers, I realized they were more than just accessories to my environment; they were essential to my joy. Despite the clear happiness they brought me, I hadn't fully integrated them into my life. It was during the quieter moments, away from the hustle and bustle, that I understood how deeply I value these natural elements. Society often directs us to prioritize material success, but it's the simple pleasures, like the feel of soil between my fingers, is what really matters.

Plants and flowers do more than just beautify a space; they serve as a reminder of life's inherent beauty and the unique charm of each living thing. My hands in the soil, caring for these plants, felt right—it was a passion waiting to be fully realized.

The decision was clear: start a garden.

Now, every place I call home will be filled with the presence of plants and flowers. When I returned to the U.S., I began to put this plan into action. The fall season is perfect for planting bulbs that will bloom in the spring, and I've started with three pots of tulips—10 bulbs in total. This is just the beginning of my gardening adventure, filled with learning and experimentation. I'm exploring different potting soils and gardening techniques to discover what works best. And, I'm planting LOTs of tulips...100s!! Along with other flowers.

Starting this garden is symbolic of a new chapter in my life. It's not just about the blooms that will eventually flourish; it's about the growth process itself. I am excited for what lies ahead and eager to share more as my garden—and I—continue to grow.

In full bloom,
Ty
