I started my creator journey by documenting what the hell I was gonna do next after shutting down my membership (Growthtrackers) in a little newsletter called Revenue Rulebreaker.
Enough people stepped up to support that that, one year later, it's become a real project.
Now, I want to grow it into a more substantial home for indie entrepreneurs who don't feel represented by mass media or the online biz owner scene. There's more content than ever but a shockingly small amount of it is reliable, intriguing stories about true to self business owners like us.
So I'm launching a campaign to fund Revenue Rulebreaker's growth from now through February. Let me explain why and where this money will go.
Why I need this money
Revenue Rulebreaker brings in money from four places: subscriptions, sponsorships, affiliate income and events. Sponsorships are going great (or they did in 2025) but subscriptions—my main revenue stream—are pretty far behind their target. Affiliate and events aren't even close to real revenue streams yet, though I'm exploring both for 2026.
I wanted to close out 2025 with 500 Legends and we're currently around 180. That's still pretty great and I am over the moon with gratitude for every single person who backs this project and joins our creative network. Huge thanks to all the Lifetime Legends because you really made this thing fly this year. But unfortunately, it's a shortfall that leaves me no cash to invest in this project's growth. Our October anniversary drive didn't go as well as I'd hoped and we're seeing a lot of cancellations right now (and I expect more) so I'll keep focusing on the subscription but I also need funds to keep going.
So my idea was that if I could just raise some money for the expenses—beyond my salary—in the meantime, it would mean I could keep investing in making Revenue Rulebreaker and Legends better. Most importantly, I could invest in its growth, which is critical for it's survival.
I calculated the expenses for the next three months as $4600 which breaks down to:
- Ghost hosting fees $100/mo
- Ghost development work $1000 one time
- Facebook ads for new subscribers $300/mo
- Newsletter ads for new subscribers $400/mo
- Guest contributors $400/mo (pays for 1-2 writers) -> We have 2 guest stories going out in Nov, 1 in Dec and probably 2 in Jan!
You might be asking how sustainable this project is if I need to fundraise for expenses and I'd still say it's pretty sustainable. It's just gonna grow SLOW AS HELL without more cash and I'm gonna have to work my ass off on the sponsorship and affiliate side which leaves me less time to cater to readers and paid subscribers.
