Flax is a plant based fibre textile crop, that once spun and woven becomes linen, a beautiful sustainable fibre, with a rich history and a heritage in the UK.
Let’s Grow Flax started out as a local community flax growing project circling out from Farnham and surrounding towns, founded in 2023 by Bee from @BeeKayMakes, supported by Ginny from @Myrtle_Sweet, both passionate local fibre lovers and skilled artisans in traditional textiles crafts. With our support, over 30 members have grown a small patch of fibre flax in their gardens, allotments and even flower pots, gaining hands-on experience of flax sowing, growing, harvesting, and retting.
The aim is to revive forgotten heritage skills, and regain skills for a sustainable textile future. We teach how to turn the flax straw into soft fibres ready for spinning. We offer spinning courses but also collaborate with a pioneering flax fibre spinning mill to create communally grown, locally produced linen yarn.
in 2024 we created the first communally produced and locally grown linen denim jeans (flax makes linen yarn) and exhibited the jeans at the Sustainable Fashion Week show in Bristol.
Since then we carry on growing, learning and expanding the number of people that love to have flax fun in their gardens, and even plant pots on patios. If you'd like to join us in 2026, have a look at here.
