What does a group of photographers do to kill some time? Wander around a historical cemetery of course.

The Toronto Necropolis dates back to 1850 and is one of Toronto’s oldest and most historic cemeteries. The main office was built by architect Henry Langley in 1872 in the Gothic Revival Style and now serves as the cemetery office.

The details on this building and others are beautiful.

The list of historical figures buried here is impressive, especially if you are from the area and know your history.

You can find a list of them here.

The grounds are peaceful, lush and beautiful. It’s a place where many go to walk in quiet.

There were many vignettes to be found, like this iron gate and the bench below.

There are also quite a variety of tombstones. From the mausoleum to very old grave markers, to the artistic, Celtic and the more modern styles.

I was intrigued by this scroll over a rock formation marker. It’s so worn that it was difficult to read dates and names.

If you’re ever in the area, it’s worth a wander around. It’s a beautiful setting and an interesting historical place in Toronto.
