Kelsey's Travel Tales, Week 1
I walked into a small restaurant in a hidden alleyway of Istanbul's old town. It smells like chicken, coffee and spices, and cute white haired men are giggled over a private joke in the corner. A smiley woman with crooked teeth greets me, motioning to her 30's-something son to seat me by the window so that I can bring in other tourists. He obeys with a sweaty motion and an exasperated breath, showing me to the table. I order chicken soup and an oversized piece of soft bread with melted sheep's cheese. It's delicious. The mom glides up to me again, and I motion with a mouth full of cheese how scrumptious everything is. She ignores my compliment and says, "Where you from?" I say Chicago. She says, "Chicago! Are you...(motions to the band on her ring finger)?" I nod, still attempting to chew a much-too-large bite, and her whole face and shoulders drop. She pops down my requested water and looks behind her, shaking her head at her son.
