World Collage Day plans

World Collage Day plans

Mar 15, 2023

World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration of collage on the Second Saturday of May. Initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018, we invited artists and art venues to hold events on that day to celebrate collage. World Collage Day is about artists connecting across borders against a global context of entrenchment and separation. And the day is about an art medium that excels at bringing different things together to create new forms and new ways of thinking. Ric Kasini Kadour, the editor of Kolaj Magazine, writes, “We created World Collage Day because we wanted to honour this community of artists and to remind the world what a spirit of cooperation, mutual support, and creativity can look like.”

In 2019, I created an event – Local Glue: Community Cut & Paste at Estelle Stair Gallery in Rockport. In addition to having a solo collage exhibit, I facilitated a community-created collage, with great participation from locals and visitors alike.

In 2021, I held an international call for collage art with the theme Think Global, Glue Local from which I presented an online exhibit of round collages, and published a book of selected images.

In 2022, I repeated the international call, this time asking for house-shaped collages. The online exhibit and subsequent publication were called Collage in the House. I also created a call for Coastal Bend artists to create collages for an exhibit at the Gallery at Anita Diebel Studio in Rockport. These images were published as Coastal Bend Collage and a community collage event was also held on World Collage Day. Rockport Center for the Arts participated, as well, by calling on their member artists to submit collages for the Members’ Gallery that month.

This year, my plans are even bigger! I'm hosting 2 calls for collage art - Faces of Collage, an international call, through, and another local call, with a subsequent exhibit at the Gallery at Anita Diebel Studio. Plus a whole lot more!

Plans for World Collage Day 2023 in Rockport include:

  • Call for collage art and exhibit at the Gallery at Anita Diebel Studio

  • Highlighting local collage artists that are part of Moon Over Water Gallery

  • Collage art demos at Moon Over Water Gallery

  • A large “fill in the colors” collage of a well-known Rockport icon (possibly the Big Blue Crab, or Mom’s Bait Stand) that the community can add to at Moon Over Water Gallery

  • Collages in the Members’ Gallery at Rockport Center for the Arts (May 5 – June 8, 2023)

  • Collage activity for Rockport Center for the Arts’ Free Family Saturday (May 13, 2023)

  • “Playing with Paper” Collage Workshop at Rockport Center for the Arts (May 6, 2023)

  • Two-part series of lectures: “History of Collage” and “Survey of Contemporary Collage” at Rockport Center for the Arts (May 4 & May 11, 2023)

  • A “What is Collage?” exhibit at Aransas County Public Library

  • A free collage activity kit at Aransas County Public Library

  • Receptions at Moon Over Water Gallery, the Gallery at Anita Diebel Studio, and others on World Collage Day, as part of the Austin Street Second Saturday Art Walk (May 13, 2023)

If you'd like to support these efforts, I've made a "Wishlist" here on the Buy Me a Coffee page with a couple of specific asks. General one-time support can also be made through the Local Glue website (I get a bigger cut of those donations.)

I do hope that you will participate in one of the open calls, or host your own World Collage Day activity. If you are in the Rockport area, please do plan on stopping by for one or more of the activities that I have planned. It is going to be such a good time.

I was featured in the World Collage Day 2019 Special Edition of Kolaj Magazine for my efforts to promote and elevate the medium of collage, and for my work in the local community. Help me continue this important work!

It takes a village! I want to acknowledge the great partnerships with:

Rockport Center for the Arts

The Gallery at Anita Diebel Studio

Moon Over Water Gallery

Aransas County Public Library

If you’d like to support these upcoming World Collage Day activities, and help spread the word about COLLAGE, please consider a small gift. Any amount will help me provide kits for the library event, promotional materials, and more to make the World Collage Day activities in Rockport fun and accessible. Contribute any amount – it all makes a difference!
