Creativity is calling!

Creativity is calling!

Honored to have this piece recognized in the Big Wave, annual members' exhibition at Rockport Center for the Arts this year.

I'm sharing juror Michelle Smythe's comments here.

Thank you so much for inviting me to judge the Merit Artist Show. I enjoyed spending time in your beautiful galleries, and I was pleased to see so many high-quality works of art by talented artists. It was tough to narrow it down to only 3 winners and 3 Honorable Mentions.

My process was to spend some time in each gallery familiarizing myself with the submitted works of art and allowing the interesting details in the artworks to slowly reveal themselves - it is a sort of “get-to-know-you” period.  From this, I made a list of my top 12 pieces. Then, I went through the applications with Catey, so my choices are based upon both the works on display as well as the images submitted with the application.

(Side note: Application images can make or break a judge’s opinion. That is why it is so important to submit good images of your work, and in this case, we are looking for artists who can put together an exhibition. Therefore, artists need to show the juror that they have -or can produce- a body of work).

Some of the things I took into consideration are:

First and foremost, is the work interesting, pleasing, or intriguing to look at? Does it catch the eye. Is there something about the work of art that calls your attention and sets it apart from the others?

  1. Quality - is the work well-made, well-presented, professional?

  2. How do the artistic elements and principles come into play? Is the work of art well-organized, in proportion, well composed, balanced, unified?

  3. Is it original, unique - or have I seen this a hundred times already? Personally, I want to see works that show me something new and different.

The winning artists and Honorable Mentions meet all of these criteria for me.

First I’ll discuss the Honorable Mentions - I wish I could give these awards, as well:

Love how Kelly can take an old funky item and make it funkier and somehow new! I enjoy her combinations of nostalgia, found objects and encaustic.

If you get a chance, check out the show.
