Working with the SharePoint Modern list form

If you're new to SharePoint Modern lists, you may be wondering how to customize the out of the box (oob) SharePoint list form to make it more user friendly. First, a word about some underlying differences between classic list forms and modern list forms.

Classic SharePoint lists (such as in SharePoint 2013) had three out of the box (oob) forms: New, Edit and Display. Modern lists have a single form, and how you get to it determines whether it is in New mode, Edit mode or View mode.

In classic SharePoint lists, we could change the column ordering in the list settings to rearrange fields on the New, Edit and Display Forms. As of this writing, that still works in Modern lists. (You'll notice that the List Settings page in SharePoint Online is identical to the classic List Settings page.) However, there was no easy way to hide fields on the New, Edit and Display forms. It was possible to turn on management of content types to hide fields on forms, and we can still do that in a Modern list through the list settings, but it's pretty clunky if all you want to do is hide a single field, but it makes for a non-intuitive user experience.

In Modern lists, you can open the New form, edit the form (upper right hand corner) and rearrange columns or uncheck them to remove them from the form. Easy Peasy!! I love it!! (Hint: don't forget to click the Save button in the top left of the Edit Columns pane to save your form changes)

However, you CAN'T remove the Title field that way, so if you need to do so, please see Norm Young's excellent blog post here: https://normyoung.ca/2019/09/13/sharepoint-default-forms-and-powerapps/.

Note the following Pros and Cons. If you use the oob Edit Form/Edit Columns approach to customize your form, those changes are tied to the list and will get copied when you copy the list. If you use the customize with Power Apps approach, they will not get copied if you copy the list.
