Episode 3: Tunnel Vision — Understanding Why New Pilates Instructors Freeze, Forget Cues & Feel Blocked
🎙️ Listen on Apple Podcasts
If you’re a Pilates instructor who freezes mid-class, blanks on cues you know, or leaves teaching feeling wired, depleted, or doubting yourself, this isn’t a confidence problem. It’s a nervous system response.
The Pilates Instructor Nervous System Reset is a somatic toolkit designed to help you regulate in real time — before, during, and after teaching so you can move out of survival mode and back into presence, clarity, and self-trust.
What This Episode Covers
In Episode 3 of Pilates, Perfectionism & Personal Evolution, we explore tunnel vision, what it is, why it happens to new instructors, and how it affects not just your cueing, but your creativity, career opportunities, and how you see your future. Somatic tools to stop freezing, blanking out, and burning out while teaching
You'll Learn:
Why blanking out in class isn't about lack of preparation (it's your body in survival mode)
What tunnel vision actually feels like in your body and brain during teaching
How fight-or-flight shuts down memory, creativity, and clear thinking
Why opportunities feel scarce when your nervous system is overwhelmed
The connection between regulation and intuition as a Pilates teacher
How perfectionism keeps you stuck in "I have to get this right" energy
Why "trying harder" doesn't work (and what does)
Understanding Tunnel Vision in Pilates Teaching
Tunnel vision happens when your body enters survival mode. Your nervous system detects threat (even if it's just the fear of messing up in front of clients), and suddenly:
Your literal vision narrows
Your mind races or goes blank
Access to what you know decreases dramatically
Creativity shuts down
Everything feels urgent and overwhelming
This is dysregulation—and it doesn't just affect cueing. It impacts how you see opportunities, make decisions, and imagine your future as an instructor.
My Story: Teaching Through Tunnel Vision
In this episode, I share my own experience teaching at multiple studios, constantly scanning for approval, believing that if one opportunity didn't work out, that was it. There were no other options. My world felt small.
That belief didn't come from reality. It came from a dysregulated nervous system.
When your nervous system softens, your world expands:
Cueing flows naturally
Creativity returns
Opportunities feel abundant, not scarce
You stop living in survival mode
This Episode Is For You If:
✓ You're a Pilates instructor in your first 0-5 years
✓ You blank out, rush, or freeze under pressure during class
✓ You feel creatively blocked or discouraged
✓ You're stuck in comparison or "I missed my chance" thinking
✓ You're exhausted from constantly trying to prove yourself
✓ You feel like you've studied everything, but can't access it when it matters
Reflection Questions (From Episode 3)
Take a moment with these:
Where do I notice tunnel vision showing up in my teaching or career right now?
What does my body feel like right before I blank out or spiral?
What happens when I stop trying to fix the moment and simply stay with it?
What opportunities might I be filtering out when I'm in survival mode?
(Episode 3.2 will dive deeper into practices for working with these patterns.)
Why This Matters for New Pilates Instructors
Most teacher training programs focus on technique, anatomy, and choreography. Almost none address the nervous system's role in teaching performance.
Understanding tunnel vision helps you:
Stop blaming yourself for forgetting cues
Recognize dysregulation before it takes over
Build a more sustainable teaching practice
Access your intuition and creativity
See opportunities you're currently filtering out
This isn't about fixing yourself. There's nothing wrong with you.
