There are two types of samplers: to learn stitches and then display, and to work on for years and try on new embroidery techniques and patterns.
I have one for work on, and it is about 20 years old (picture 1). I keep it to try something new and to show it to my students.
There are several small pieces with stitches, that I attached to this sampler. I embroidered these pieces at the edges of some of my works. Then I cut them out, collected and attached to this sampler.
One day I will complete it ( fill it completely with stitches) and take out from frame. I am not going to make a lining to it, to keep the revers side visible.
There are other samplers made by my colleagues (pictures 2 - 5).
The last one is an embroidered panel - ornamental sampler to learn and display.
I recommend you to start your own sampler to work on for years.
