A proposito di Katherine Soucie
Upcycling Directory, resources, stories and a global reuse community
Katherine Soucie, PhD, is a British-Canadian artist, designer, and textile waste researcher whose work centres on creative reuse, remanufacturing, and mending as both material practice and critical inquiry. With over 25 years of experience, she works across textiles, fashion, and visual art, developing multidisciplinary approaches that transform textile industry waste into new material and cultural value.
She is the founder of Sans Soucie, an award-winning experimental textile design and upcycling studio established in 2002. Through this platform, she has pioneered artisanal and scalable methods for reworking pre-consumer hosiery waste from manufacturing into textiles, garments, accessories, sculpture, and installation. Her work has been exhibited, sold, and commissioned internationally, including across Canada, USA, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared in fashion, film, theatre, and performance contexts.
Soucie studied fashion design in London and Toronto, and textiles and visual art in Vancouver, where her studio was based from 2002 to 2019 before relocating to London. She recently completed a practice-based PhD at Kingston School of Art, Kingston University London. Her doctoral research, New Geographies of (Re)Making, investigates the creative reuse of UK sock manufacturing waste and introduces two original frameworks: Up-Cycology, a mindset for rethinking value and waste, and M.E.N.D., a practical tool for mapping reuse strategies, material relationships, and collaborative making processes.
Now based in East London, Soucie continues to develop new material systems and applications for textile waste while expanding her work into research, writing, and education. She is the founder of the Upcycling Atlas.
