Consumed
If this earth were to go without rain
And the moon, left abandoned by sun
They couldn’t know of my emptiness
How the ties to a heart come undone
When the wind stirs, in silent branches
With its secrets, all keeping me awake
Your absence becomes a withering leaf
With weight, too heavy for me to take
Echoing in the chambers of the heart
Sights, sounds, and fondest memories
Threads, stolen from yesterday’s quilts
Fraying with the strain of old melodies
Forced to swim in this ocean of longing
With so little hope of making it across
Living without, is like breathing in water
Slowly drowning in this sorrow of loss
A thousand times I scream “I miss you”
While each day, into another, just runs
Every beat of this long-suffering heart
Consumed by the fire of a million suns
